THE MESS OF 3000 TEACHERS RECRUITMENT BY AKSUBEB
It is no longer news that the Akwa Ibom State Government through one of its agencies (SUBEB) has began the process of recruiting at least 3000 NCE holders as teachers into the primary school system. The news here is that the process is a complete failure, due to poor and outdated models and systemic corruption in the system.
The visit by Gossips Arena Crew to some of the centers designated for collection of application forms, revealed that there was little or no coordination as even security agencies were found looking away helplessly as applicants fought their lives out to just get the FREE forms. The Board staff were aiding the confusion as most of them arrived the centers as late as 12 noon instead of the designated 8 am daily. And upon arrival, will refuse to issue the forms until chaos sets in. Some even use abusive words and foul languages to address the applicants.
A visit to the West Itam Secondary School, Ekit Itam on monday (8/5/2017) revealed that atleast six persons including pregnant women slumped in the process of struggling to get the forms. At the Aka Community School Uyo, fight broke out and the event was cancelled for that day. At the Ikot Ekpene Center, the SUBEB officials received the beatings of their career for trying to hoard the forms which also led to cancellation.
Our respondent spoke with an applicant identified as Etimbuk Okon, a graduate of the Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit at the Ikot Ekpene Center. She narrated how security agents were bribed with as low as 500 Naira so as to gain entrance into the halls were forms were issued. There are also rumors of other forms of corrupt practices such as payment before issuance which is a contradiction to the media advert stating that the forms are FREE.
Our submissions are that, the Board is either grossly unprepared for this process or maybe it's a ploy to deny Akwa Ibomites the desired opportunity they deserve to serve their state at that capacity. This level of recruitment requires just an online portal and applicants can easily register at ease even at their pace.
We therefore use this medium to alert His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel that his goodwill is about to be rubbished on the altar of poor planning, corruption and disrespect for fellow citizens. Even as we also call on him to ensure that the dates for issuance of forms be extended to accommodate all qualified applicants.
